Review: FANTASTIC FOUR #571

Fantastic Four #571

You are warned, here be spoilers.

Oh, Eaglesham. I mean, I’ll say this for him – the man can draw Galactus ravaging a city. And Sue Richards’s face is finally the right size for her face. But there’s a panel where Johnny Storm’s bicep is like four times as thick as his forearm, in a lot of shots characters’ sizes and positions are so mismatched they look like they were assembled from clipart.

Hickman’s writing remains fascinating. It’s less in touching character moments this time, and more in the grand ideas – but what ideas they are. The narrative boxes that open the issue read, “I don’t believe in murder. But this morning, before breakfast, I helped kill a Galactus on Earth 2012.” Reed’s been hopping about the multiverse with the Council of Reeds (which is still an insanely awesome idea), being wooed for membership. Although the group has already purportedly shown (our) Reed the worst of what they do (which is both horrifying and hilarious), I feel like Hickman’s saving up for some Terrible Reveal that will make (our) Reed’s permanent membership with them an unthinkable idea.

There’s not much more to say about the plot of this issue, apart from the surprise-hook at the end, and I’m not going to spoil that. I’m… hoping either Eaglesham gets better, or leaves the book, because I like the Fantastic Four, and I’m really enjoying Hickman’s writing.
